ABOUT EAST TOKYO MAP
East Tokyo is booming! However, tourists and Tokyo residents have yet to explore what the bustling east side of town has to offer.
Bakurocho, Higashi Nipponbashi and Asakusa are already moderately known for their specialised apparel stores and fine art galleries, but add the countless artisans and manufacturers in Kuramae and Okachimachi, a rise in custom bicycle stores and ateliers by up-and-coming designers and artists, the amazing Art centre 3331 ARTS CHIYODA in Akihabara and JR developed cultural bazaars such as 2k540 and Maachi Ecute and it is easy to see that there is more to explore than one might think at a first glance.
Yet, we still hear how surprised many people are when they come across our store. It seems that many would never have expected to find a place like this near Akihabara, and when they do, it is mostly by coincidence.
To address this problem Publisher Antenna has started the EAST TOKYO MAP project. The project consists out of a beautifully printed guide and an easy-to-navigate website which features an up-to-date overview of all the interesting shops, galleries and cultural centres to be found on the east side of the Yamanote line. Since Tokyo is such an enormous city there are many people who are not even aware of the many interesting places they have close to their own house, let alone people who only occasionally visit Tokyo.

EAST TOKYO MAP とは
馬喰町や東日本橋、浅草橋は今ではアパレル、ファインアート、雑貨、自転車関連のお店などが多い。蔵前や御徒町では若いクラフトの職人によるアトリエ兼ショップが集積している。秋葉原では元学校だった建物がアートセンターになったり、明治時代の古い駅舎が商業施設となっている。至るところで、ニュー・カルチャーが生まれ、そして年々それが更にアップデートされている。
しかしその一方で、まだ「このエリアに来るのが初めて」というビジターも多く、「お店にどうやって辿り着いたら良いかわからない」「営業曜日や時間がまちまちで、楽しみにして来たら目当ての店が休みだった」「次にどこのお店に行けばいいか迷う」などという声もよく聞く。
イーストトーキョーエリアに、今、どんなお店が、どれだけ、どこにあるのか。一目で見てこのエリアを体感でき、街の使い方がわかる地図があったらと「EAST TOKYO MAP」の作成を始めた。そしてもうひとつの目的。地図がきっかけとなってよりこの街を見出す人が増え、結果、今以上に魅力的なショップやオフィス、居住者が増えてくれたらと考えている。また、ホステルなどの宿泊施設も充実し始め、外国の方のステイも増加している。彼らもまたトラディショナルなものだけでなく、こうした地図を通じて、新しい文化の情報によりアクセスしやすくなることを望んでいると信じている。
イーストトーキョーを使い、楽しむために。東への人の移動を促すために。 散歩しよう、体験しよう、移り住もう。この街は、今なお進化中です。
